Building industry skills with BMT
2 September 2021
As the Australian defence industry prepares for the Naval Shipbuilding Plan, having a workforce that is well trained and informed is critical to defence industry capability.
No matter if you are just starting out in the industry or would like to upskill and refresh your knowledge around maritime assets and systems, international engineering, science and technology consultancy BMT offers a wide range of courses for individuals taught by experts.
With experience as both operators and designers of defence systems, BMT’s experts provide detailed insights into the process for design and management of warships and submarines.
Keen to find out more? Below is a summary of some of the key courses.
Whole Life Warship Capability Management
A five-day course designed for those who are new to maritime in defence or want to know more about the warships they work with, this course provides an overview of the whole lifecycle of a warship. From requirements analysis, design and acquisition processes, to in-service operations and warfare, and through-life-support. Learn about the onboard systems, how they affect the design process and how they are used to deliver capability.
What delegates say: “The course gave me a high-level yet complete understanding of submarine design. It has also helped me to set solid foundations to work from in this complex business.” – Student from Department of Defence.
This course is certified by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects.
Submarine Design and Engineering
A five-day course catering to technical and non-technical backgrounds alike, this course provides an introduction into the operations, systems and design process for a conventional submarine. The course will equip attendees with a complete understanding of conventional submarine technology and how capability requirements and new technologies can impact overall submarine design and management. Finishing off with a design task exercise to provide hands-on understanding of the trade-off that needs to be made between capability, size, cost and performance to generate a 3D representation of a submarine.
What delegates say: “I found the training course is the best training I have ever attended in my 20 plus years of corporate life in Australia!” – Mitch, Ships Division Department of Defence.
This course is certified by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects.
Fleet Life Cycle Management Course
A five-day course that provides an understanding of Fleet Lifecycle Management methodologies. Starting with the basics of Asset Management in line with ISO 55001 and moving into Navy policies and procedures for managing an operational fleet at sea, including looking at some methodologies employed by other Navies to achieve the same outcome. Students will learn how defence undertakes asset management and how this has been impacted through recent changes in Navy policy. This course includes guest lecturers from academia and from heavy industry to provide an alternate point-of-view into how assets are managed in those domains and a look into the complexity in the maritime space. Case studies will also be discussed of both Navy and commercial examples to emphasise the importance of good lifecycle management practices.
What delegates say: “I really appreciate the interactivity, particularly with Dave’s sessions. The experience in the ‘room’ really came to the fore. Excellent organisation for my participation, timely receipt of advice and the course materials. I would recommend this course to others.” – Student, Department of Defence
This course is certified by the Asset Institute of Australia.
Each course comes with a printed course book provided for students to work through and to refer to in the future. BMT can assist with the application for SADI funding possibly up to 100% of the course cost.
